Description

This is a quick digital painting I did for my NonWestern Art History class Final. They are dancing the traditional Phillipino Tinikling, where the dancers skip around in complex forms, taking care not to let their feet get caught in the bamboo sticks. The sticks are tapped in time to music, and every third beat they click together.

I've only ever seen it in real life once, which makes me sad. Still, I rarely get the chance to learn about my mom's heritage.

Behind the dancers are banana trees. My mom is always telling me about the red bananas she ate when she was a child, and how much more sweeter they are than the yellow bananas we get here in America. So, I put those in. The building in the back is a traditional rural house called a Bahay Kubo... they are the symbol of community and working together, as when the house is to be moved, the entire village flanks the house to pick it up and place it in the new location.

Now to finish the 4 page artist statement by tomorrow... T_T
